Climate Vulnerability Assessment

Annual ReportOne of our FY2013 projects is looking at the use of downscaled climate models for the Aleutian and Bering Sea region for use in vulnerability assessments. The project is a collaboration with the USGS Alaska Climate Science Center (AK CSC) and Alaska Ocean Observing System (AOOS). In January 2014 we held a public workshop for the project held in association with the Alaska Marine Science Symposium.

Find out more about the project HERE.

Alaska Marine Science Symposium

Thanks to the North Pacific Research Board (NPRB) for another great Alaska Marine Science Symposium (AMSS). We're already looking forward to AMSS 2015.

For those of you who missed it, copies of the AMSS Program and Abstract Book are available online in PDF format.

Strategic Science Plan

Kelp
The ABSI LCC has completed a Strategic Science Plan to guide our activities for the next five years. A draft of the plan was available for public review and comment through September 21, 2013. The final version of the plan is now available for download.

In February 2014, the ABSI LCC Steering Committee held a two-day retreat to develop a shorter term Operations Plan that identifies in more detail where we intend to focus our efforts over the next 1-2 years. The Operations Plan will be available during Q2 2014.

 Marine Vessel Traffic

Bulk Carrier Traffic

The ABSI LCC is working with the Wildlife Conservation Society, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and the Scenarios Network for Alaska and Arctic Planning on an analysis of marine vessel traffic in our region. Starting with a three-year archive of satellite-based Automatic Identification System (AIS) locations, this project will identify major vessel corridors along the Northern Great Circle Route that transits through the Aleutian islands. The data set also includes the increasingly-used shipping routes through the Bering Strait. Geospatial products from this analysis will be made publicly available for use in vulnerability assessments.
